The past three TGE trips have been to Quabbin Reservoir. Northwest Quabbin was a hiking adventure on the western side of Quabbin. We followed a brook down to the reservoir where we were rewarded with some great views of Prescott Peninsula. We also found an old foundation and an old well.
The next two adventures were maritime expeditions on the eastern side of Quabbin; Quabbin Res. East and North Quabbin. It's only $30 to rent a boat for the day (+ $4 parking). Here we realized how big Quabbin really is. We traveled more than 30 miles over the water on Sunday. Mt. Zion is very long and takes over an hour to go completely around it in the 8hp boats we had. To the northwest of Mount L, an incredible view of Mt. Monadnock dominates the skyline. The southern end of Curtis Hill still has the remains of an Dugmar golf clubhouse. Prescott Peninsula is amazing to see from the water. It's much steeper than we expected from maps and aerial photos. The very northern part of the reservoir has powerlines going across it. We were able to go on land and climb up a hill to get a nice view of the powerlines and the reservoir. Since the reservoir is quite low, some places in the northern part are shown as water on the map, but are actually dry and impassible by boat.
This is a great place to go and I suspect we will be making one more visit before the boating season comes to a close on Oct 13th. |
