Known for being the largest waterfall in Massachusetts, Bash Bish Falls did not disappoint. The whole area is breathtaking and a refreshing interruption from normal life, yet it is very easy to get to. The air was clean, the views were excellent, and the weather was a sunny 80-85F. The lower falls is a quick, 15 minute hike from the parking area.
However Justin and I quickly found ourselves uninterested with the lower falls where most of the other visitors were gathered, and decided to find a way upstream. And find a way up we did. Up and up, and more up, each stage more difficult (and dangerous) than the previous. We almost didn't continue past this spot where we actually scaled the right-hand side of the ledge. It was about 100 feet above the 'bottom' and pretty much straight down (see this picture and this one for perspective). We were able to make it to the base of that ledge through some difficult, but reasonable maneuvering. Then we were stuck, or so we thought. After some serious consideration, we were able to climb the side of this rock. Once up there, there was a marked trail not 30ft from there where we were able to resume a more reasonable trek.
The trip to Bash Bish Falls, as well as nearby Mt. Everett, rates as one of the best of all TGE adventures and both are highly recommended. We plan on returning in the winter to bring you "Frozen Bash Bish Falls". |
