Wow, I can tell it is your favorite insect.  Rich's too.  Thanks for the info.  I guess that explains why it didn't move when Rich prodded it.  You have become my resident expert on all things living in the wild!  Thanks.

Bev- you might already know about this little creation but I thought I might enlighten you (since I don't need wiki this time).

This is the outer skin of a Dragonfly Larvae. If you go check it out today it's probably in the same EXACT spot because nothing is actually left living inside of it!

Dragonflies lay their eggs on the outer edge of a body of water (in this case your pond).
The egg hatches to become a super smaller version of what you see above. It grows for a month or so until it wants to get out of its shell. It then climbs up onto a place where it will not be disturbed for about 24 hours. In this time the outer layer of skin drys and the dragonfly inside backs up out of his skin (you will see the dry white marks on the back of the above) to hang out there until its wings dry and fully expand.
