The Soviet version of the flag raising at Iwo Jima. Like Iwo Jima this photo was staged, the initial flag raising happened the night before around midnight.
Edit from NJC:
My Georgian friend Tamara says:
This picture is not the authentic one:) You can see the real one depicting the Soviets raising the flag here - as you can see, there are only two persons present there- Russian Yegorov- the one who holds the man raising the flag- and my fellow Georgian Meliton Kantaria- the man actually raising the flag. So, yes, the guy who put the flag on the Reighstag symbolizing the defeat of Nazi Germany was Georgian. Even more- he was from the same small town my family is originally from- Ochamchira:) And every May 9 (the Soviet Victory Day), he was always featured in the local newspaper. Kinda our very beloved hero:)

From Tamara:
"Announcement: leaving the village without accompanying military patrol is prohibited. Violators will be shot"

Moscow 1535 km and Berlin 165 km. I think the sign in the background is a warning that they are about to enter Germany. Some of these signs read that the hour for revenge was upon us, but i'm not sure what this one says, though the bottom word is Germany.
From Tamara:
"Berlin-Moscow"(That's pretty obvious); the sign below says: "Area for loading (?) the wounded" and the sign in the background says :"Soldier, remember that you are on the territory of Hitler's Germany."

The Soviet launched 80,000 of these things at Berlin to kick off the Battle of Berlin. Note that those are American trucks that they are being launched from.

I'm not sure what the sign says but I know CMEPTb (smert) means dead, or death.
From Tamara:
"Death to Childkillers"
